Gemini Saga of Saint Seiya by Tsume HQS (Anime Figure Pre-Order Alert!)

Considered to be one of the biggest anime phenomena of the 1980’s, the action-oriented fantasy series Saint Seiya has gathered a resurgence in popularity due to Toei Animation’s latest addition to the franchise: Saint Seiya Omega.

Omega takes place 25 years after the Holy Wars of the 20th century, and features a new group of Saints to assist the Goddess Athena.

“Saint Seiya Omega”. Toei Animation (2012). Now simulcasting on Crunchyroll.

The latest Saint Seiya aside, if the original series were to return to R1 DVD print, I’m sure many fans in the United States would  be thrilled. Well, we can dream.

At least for now, there have been some great additions to the anime figure-verse via Tsume (爪):

tsume

Based in Belgium, Tsume is a company that has been creating high quality anime figure sculpts for the European Market since 2010. According to their official website, they have partnered with Shueisha, Toei, and TV Tokyo in their sculpts of characters from Saint Seiya, Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, and other titles. Their focus seems to be popular shonen series.

Tsume first caught my attention with some online images of their work at Japan Expo 2012. However, the quality of their sculpts only “wowed” me for the first time this past November when I purchased their Natsu Dragnir of Fairy Tail.

The beautiful textures and attention to detail of these anime figures aren’t done justice in photographs. Also–While I am eagerly awaiting the release of Gemini Saga, it is disheartening that Phoenix Ikki will be very challenging to track down. This is because each figure Tsume produces is never re-released, and has a very limited run (from the hundreds to a few thousand). If you like one of their figures, I strongly suggest you pre-order it. Good news: As the figures can be pricey, the official webpage offers different payment plans.

Official Description:

Saga is said to be the most powerful of the Gold saints, he actually secretly took the place of the Great Pope. He also happens to be one of the most charismatic and popular character of the franchise due his great background history. Despite his power and madness, the man is also cool and thoughtful. Our main challenge with our statue was to find the finest balance to express every side of this mysterious man.

We decided to set him standing, with a slight side view, watching an unseen threat and holding his helmet in his left hand.

You will find this statue to be the perfect continuance of what we did with Ikki in the Saint Seiya HQS range.

5saintseiyaTechnical details:

The head is slightly tilted, so it strengthens Saga’s look.

A great deal of work has been achieved with the modeling of the hair. The painting is set in several gradients starting from the tip of the lock.

The skin is also done with three tone of gradients from the base color.

5saintseiya3The Cloth

Gemini’s Gold Cloth has a lot of small details as the arabesques on the helmet or the greaves.

Moreover, unlike the Bronze Cloth, the Gold ones are with only one range of color: Golden. Hence, the challenge is to achieve rendering each part of the Cloth so the whole is realistic and easy on the eye.

The gold effect is done by applying metal painting and varnish to get a visual result stunning, and highlighted by the contrast with the base.

Technical details:

The golden metallic paints are really great, especially with the use of the air brush to get some realistic and natural lights and shadows.

The color set of the Cloth is based upon three different shades of gold, depending of the Cloth part. Added to the gradients and light effects, the final result is really stunning.

Ikki is a loner. However, underneath his rough exterior is a compassionate, noble, and mature character who never hesitates to sacrifice himself for his friends. Ikki  is extraordinarily resilient and hard to kill. Like the phoenix, he can return from death, and receives a boost in strength.

Ikki is considered like the stronger Bronze Saint. It was important for us to feel the power without loss of charisma. Good support and determined look, ready for action.

By affixing our signature we want to make the statue more mature, offering a different product line.

Armor

Armor V3 has many details, such as ruby, belt, and color schemes that make it really interesting. The armor of Mr. Araki has many reflections on its colorization, we wanted to represent them through various effects of degraded metal.
