An Over 9000 Figure Guide: S.H.Figuarts Dragon Ball Z

I’m pretty excited about S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball Z figures.

For starters, Dragonball Z is an anime classic with iconic characters, and is arguably shonen badassery at its finest. From a collector’s standpoint, these Figuarts figures are great in that they offer a lot in customization, poseability, and have a moderate price point.

The S.H. Figuarts Dragonball Z line is manufactured by Bandai, and is debuting via Bluefin Distribution. Bluefin is the official U.S. partner for two divisions of Bandai Japan: Tamashii Nations, and Bandai Hobby. Due to Bluefin having a close relationship with Bandai, all releases to the United States and Canada are exclusively channeled through them.

Bluefin has been successful in its Figuarts product line in that they are listening to U.S. market demand by gauging fan interest via polls on their official Facebook Page. I recommend following them, as there will be more opportunities to contribute to future releases in subsequent polls. Bluefin has expressed before that the main reason this figure series is able to continue is fan interest. Let them know we want more!

Below is a listing of current S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball Z releases:

Piccolo (ピッコロ)

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥3500 (45.00USD)
Release date: November 2009
Height: 170 mm (6.6 in)

Piccolo was the first S.H. Figuarts DBZ figure to be released. Accessories include an interchangeable head, mantle, a crossed-arms optional pose part, extra hands, and a turban. This figure features the colors used for Piccolo from the manga, which may disappoint fans of the anime.

For example, Piccolo’s bracers and belt are red instead of blue, his boots are brown rather than orange, and his reptilian “muscles” are yellow.

I am very happy that Bandai didn’t forget my favorite Piccolo pre-battle pose, and included the crossed arms option.

Son Goku SSJ (孫 悟空 超サイヤ人)

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥3360 (43.00USD)
Release date: January 2010, April 2013
Height: 140 mm (5.5 in)

Goku includes a pair of blasting hands, and kamehameha hands. Also, he has a hand for Instant Transmission. I really like his angry super saiyan (SSJ) face.

Son Gohan SSJ (超サイヤ人 孫 悟飯)

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥3200 (41.00USD)
Release date: July 2010
Height: 110 mm (4.3 in)

Son Gohan looks just like he did in the cell saga. He includes hair pieces for Super Saiyan and SSJ2, a removable cape, and five different faces. He looks really nice displayed next to the previous Dragon Ball Z Kai SH Figuarts, as he is made to scale.

Son Goku SSJ (孫 悟空 超サイヤ人) – Special Color Version

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥3130 (40.00USD)
Release date: June 2011
Height: 140 mm (5.5 in)

This figure is a U.S. special edition of Super Saiyan Son Goku created exclusively for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This version features completely different muscle shading effects compared to its original release. Better articulation in hip and knee joints allow for smoother action-scene posing. Angry face parts as well as interchangeable hands let Goku gather energy for Kamehameha!

Vegeta SSJ (ベジータ 超サイヤ人)

Material(s): ABS, POM, PVC
Original Price: ¥3300 (42.00USD)
Release date: December 2011
Height: 140 mm (5.5 in)

This figure represents Super Saiyan Vegeta during the Android Saga, so his boots do not have the same accents as his shoulder straps and tummy. Included are two alternate faces (one angry, the other indifferent), as well as a set of open hands + Big Bang Attack hands.

Son Goku SSJ3 (孫悟空 超サイヤ人3)

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥4725 (60.00USD)
Release date: March 2012
Height: 170 mm (6.6 in)

This rare, exclusive figure of Goku includes effect parts, extra hand parts,  and face parts. Also, unlike the previous figure releases, a translucent display stand is included. The inclusion of the stand makes sense, as the hair on this figure makes him a little top-heavy and more difficult to pose than the rest. Goku’s spiky/flowing hair does look amazing, though.

Future Trunks (未来のトランクス)

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥3990 (51.00USD)
Release date: May 2012
Height: 140 mm (5.5 in)

There are plenty of options to display Trunks. He can be either Super Saiyan or normal, with a total of 8 facial expressions and 14 hands. Also included are 2 parts for his sword.

Son Gohan SSJ (超サイヤ人 孫 悟飯) – Special Color Version

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥2350 (30.00USD)
Release date: July 2012
Height: 110 mm (4.3 in)

This Special Color Version of Son Gohan looks better than the first version. Gohan wears the purple uniform Piccolo gave him from the Cell Games, along with a blue belt. Also, the ugly lines that were present under the eyes on the first Gohan figure aren’t included this time. Accessories include: a cape, many faces, swappable hand parts, and Super Saiyan 2. Ohh!, and more  intense shadowing on the skin.

Perfect Cell (完全体セル)

Material(s): ABS, PVC
Original Price: ¥4500 (58.00USD)
Release date: November 2012
Height: unknown

This Perfect Cell figure is, well…Perfect. He’s ready to battle Special Version Son Gohan at the Cell Games. Currently available for Pre-Order online.
