Model Guide: The SD Gundams of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. (Wing 0 through 5)

It’s a Gundam!

Vintage: 1995. Studio: Sunrise.

SD (etym: Super Deformed or Superior Defender) Gundam is derived from the Gundam metaseries, which is known for its space drama and intense action. With the introduction of the SD Gundam series in the 1980s, the franchise turned toward comedy. It took super deformed style mobile weapons & characters, and placed them in fun misadventures and parodies. To Bandai, the chibified design was perfect for capsule toys & models. There are now hundreds of SD Gundam models available.

SD Gundam modeling is serious business. They may be simple to snap together, but to make an SD model look gorgeous when compared to its anime counterpart, there is sometimes more work involved than in constructing a Graded Gundam. Also, while regular Gundam model lines strive for realism, SD Gundams are popular with many customization fans.

After a long-awaited re-stocking this June, SD Gundams from the popular Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (jap. Shin Kidou Senki Gundam Wing) are available once more in most Gunpla stores. Originally manufactured in 1990, these Gundam Wing models are priced at under 10.00 USD (¥790) a piece–making for a fun, inexpensive hobby.

The Gunpla enthusiast featured today, Jesse Hackenberg, has assembled the six main SD Mobile Suit Gundam Wing models which I am sharing today:

Gundam 0

Model: SD Gundam GG , #41. mfc: 4902425761541. Artist: Jesse Hackenberg.

Model number: XXXG-00W0
Code name: Wing Gundam Zero
Type: Transformable Mobile Suit

Fire-power: 2 torso mounted, fire-linked machine cannons; 2 fire-linked vulcan guns (mounted in wing binders); 2 beam sabers (stored in shoulder recharge racks when not in use), “pile-driver” nosed shield. Optional: Twin buster rifle, which can separate into two single-barrel buster rifles (can be stored on shield).

The mental stresses the “Zero System” place on the pilot require a strong will. Wing Gundam Zero’s special “Zero System” allows the pilot’s mind to link directly with the Gundam’s combat computer, making this model special from the others in Gundam Wing. In this series, each of the main pilots attempt to master this unit.

Extremely maneuverable, the Wing Zero is also able to transform into the fighter-like “Neo-Bird mode” for added speed and mobility. Also, it is capable of wiping out entire groups of mobile suits in a single shot.

Model Review:
+ Unlike the Wing Gundam model, Wing Zero can equip his shield.
+ In true-to-anime fashion, the twin buster cannon can be combined and split, the buster pack can open up into wing mode, and additional parts are included to allow for “Neo-Bird mode”.

Gundam 01

Model: SD Gundam GG , #34. mfc: 4902425756752. Artist: Jesse Hackenberg.

Model number: XXXG-01W
Code name: Wing Gundam
Type: transformable mobile suit

Firepower: Wing Gundam closely resembles its predecessor the Wing Zero in terms of appearance and equipment. This unit has beam sabers, vulcan guns, machine cannons, and a super-OP buster rifle. The buster rifle can fire an energy beam wide enough to destroy many enemy mobile suits in a single shot. However, this power is limited to three shots before it needs recharging. Wing Gundam is also able to change into a fighter jet looking “bird mode.”

Piloted by the stoic Heero Yuy, the Wing is a scaled down version of the Wing Zero. The weapons are designed to be strong, but not as overpowering as its close ancestor.

Model Review:
+ Can transform into jet mode, wings move.
Incapable of holding its shield.
+/- Translucent plastic is not included for the beam saber, painting necessary.

Gundam 02

Model: SD Gundam GG , #35. mfc: 4902425756790. Artist: Jesse Hackenberg.

Model number: XXXG-01D
Code name: Gundam Deathscythe
Type: close combat stealth mobile suit

Firepower: 2 fire-linked vulcan guns (mounted in head), 2 fire-linked machine cannons in torso, a beam scythe that can be used to hack/slash, & a beam blade that can be launched at a target and retrieved.

Piloted by Duo Maxwell, the “God of Death”, this mechanical terror is capable of slicing through enemy mobile suits like a hot knife through butter. A silent killer, the Deathscythe is equipped with a signal jammer that makes it invisible to electronic sensors. This allows Deathscythe to sneak up on the enemy and ninja-kill.

Model Review:
+ The beam portion of the beam blade is removable, so displaying this weapon as closed is an option.
the base color of the plastic was too blue to the actual series coloring. Complete paint job required for accuracy.
+/- The beam portions of the weapons are not translucent. Painting required.

Gundam 03

Model: SD Gundam GG , #36. mfc: 4902425756776. Artist: Jesse Hackenberg.

Model number: XXXG-01H
Code name: Gundam Heavyarms
Type: heavy artillery mobile suit

Firepower: 2 fire-linked vulcan guns (mounted in head); 2 fire-linked machine cannons (torso mounted); 2 fire-linked Gatling guns (chest mounted); 2 three-tube homing missile launchers (in shoulders); 2 twelve-tube mini-missile launcher pods (on legs); a superheated army blade on right forearm for close combat. Optional: a beam Gatling gun with shield that fits on left forearm.

This walking fortress has an enormous amount of firepower that can overwhelm enemies. Pilot Trowa Barton also relys on his acrobatic skills and heated blade for times when he is low on ammo. Heavyarms never goes down without a fight.

Model Review:
+ The Heavyarm’s shoulders are able to open up for missiles. The chest also opens up for the Gatling guns.
+ The beam Gatling gun slides over the left forearm, and is optional (as the hand is actually constructed beneath it). Close-combat blade included.

Gundam 04

Model: SD Gundam GG , #37. mfc: 4902425756783. Artist: Jesse Hackenberg.

Model number: XXXG-01SR
Code name: Gundam Sandrock
Type: close combat mobile suit

Firepower: 2 fire-linked vulcan guns (mounted in head); 2 missile launch tubes (in torso); 2 heat shotels (curved swords), a superheated blade (can be stored in “backpack”), and a shield which mounts 2 “shield flasher” blinding flares. These flares can be combined with the heat shotels to form a pincer weapon.

Piloted by Quatre Winner, the Sandrock is like a tank. The most heavily armored and durable of the Gundams.

Model Review:
+ Overall, easy to put together.
+ The shotels on this Gundam can combine for their blinding special attack or can be duel-wielded.

Gundam 05

Model: SD Gundam GG , #38. mfc: 4902425756769. Artist: Jesse Hackenberg.

Model number: XXXG-01S
Code name: Shenlong Gundam
Type: close combat mobile suit

Firepower: 2 fire-linked vulcan guns (mounted in head); a “dragon fang” which has 2 flamethrowers (on right arm); a beam glaive, (stored in “backpack”), a shield–which also serves as a throwing weapon (left forearm).

Piloted by the fierce, often misogynistic, Chang Wufei. The Shenlong carries a beam glaive as its primary weapon. “Shen long” is Chinese for “god dragon,” and this Gundam lives up to its name with its other main weapon: the dragon fang. This weapon works for both grappling and striking.

top left: SD Shenlong model box. bottom left: SD Shenlong box contents. top right: A rendering of an SD Shenlong as seen in Endless Waltz. bottom right: Chang Wufei.

Model Review:
+ The “dragon fang” arm can fold in without looking awkward.
+True to the anime, this Gundam has a place on the backpack to hold its beam glaive.
Additional colors would have been helpful on the sprue. The beam glaive is on the blue sprue, which can be time-consuming to paint over.

Interested in gunpla building but don’t know where to begin?

I highly recommend Gunbie’s Blog.

FYI, all of the SD kits mentioned above are in stock at Gundamplanet.com.

*All SD Gundam Chibi art was created by Gio Tengco, aka “MobileSuitGio” of DeviantArt.

*Epyon was not included, as it is not one of main 0-5  Gundams mentioned in the series.
